STRIVING FOR PERFECTION

by Bill Kochman

01-06-2024

Well now, striving for perfection,
Is indeed a very impossible task,
So how can one get to Heaven?
Perhaps some of you may ask.

More righteous than Pharisees,
Is what Jesus at one time said,
Lose your eye, cut off your hand,
Man, you might as well be dead!

Oh just look at that mighty bar,
The Lord certainly set it so high,
Maybe there’s a hidden meaning,
We need to ask ourselves why.

Now consider the Apostle James,
He wrote about the Mosaic Law,
If you dare just break even one,
You’re guilty of breaking them all.

It is such a very steep mountain,
Why should we even try to start?
But things aren’t what they seem,
Dear friend, so please take heart.

The point that Jesus was making,
Is that we can’t be good enough,
You can strive to keep the Laws,
And do other self-righteous stuff.

Yet even with doing those things,
God’s standard you will still fail,
Your good works just won’t do it,
And you’ll have your place in Hell.

You see God gave Moses the Law,
For one very particular reason,
It was to show us all of our sins,
And to bring us to a new season.

Similar to a tough schoolmaster,
Who without mercy, harsh can be,
The Law is also a heavy burden,
From which Jesus can set us free.

Thus instead of placing our faith,
In the works we each strive to do,
We must look alone to the Cross,
To be free from the legalistic stew.

For Jesus has paid the full price,
By His blood our slate is so clean,
The Lord did what we cannot do,
Do you understand what I mean?
